Smart Trick: Surf Mobile websites in Mozilla + Change User Agent string (Browser ID)

Posted: 02-07-2006, 12:15 PM
GsmHackers,
This trick allows u to browse mobile websites in ur Mozilla browser and change the default browser ID ( user agent string) to just anything.

WML plugin
for viewing mobile web, u need to install a wml plugin called wmlbrowser in Mozilla which is attached in the post.

The current version of wmlbrowser is 0.6.10. This release is for both the Mozilla Suite and Mozilla Firefox.

To install wmlbrowser,
Install the wmlbrowser 0.6.10 XPI file by opening it in Mozilla.

Restart your browser. If you have more than one window open, make sure you close them all before restarting.
Following a restart, you should check the wmlbrowser preferences to ensure that the system is set up as you want. Use the Edit->Preferences menu to bring up the Mozilla Preferences window. Choose the wmlbrowser option from the left-hand pane.

Changing User Agent
User Agent basic theory:
Whenever a Web browser hits a Web site, it announces itself to the Web site by sending along what's known as a 'User Agent'. Some Web sites look at this User Agent to determine whether or not to let you into their site. For instance, Microsoft's Hotmail only allows Internet Explorer into the site; Mozilla users are not allowed into Hotmail. in case of mobile web, e.g. Airtel checks for the User Agent of a mobile device (e.g. a phone- nokia, SE, Moto etc....), if the user agent does not belong to a mobile device airtel does not allow u into its site.

However, it is possible to spoof the User Agent that your browser sends to Web sites. In other words, you may be using Mozilla on Linux, but you announce yourself as Internet Explorer on Windows or a Nokia on Symbian (or just anything) for those few sites who foolishly require a certain browser for entrance.

Changing the User Agent in Mozilla is actually pretty easy, but it requires changing a hidden preference. do the following...........

1. open the mozilla browser, in the address box (the location where you normally enter a URL) type: " about:config " (instead of http://whatever.com), it gives you access to your user.js file, which is where you can override your useragent string (among other things).

2. perform a Right click on the page , it will allow you to add a new string. Name the string " general.useragent.override ". Give it a value equal your new user agent. e.g. if u want to fake as OPERA 7.54 u can enter this user ID ---- Mozilla/4.0 (compatible; MSIE 6.0; Windows NT 5.1) Opera 7.54u1 [en]. Mozilla is now masquerading as your new user agent. if u want to fake as a mobile device, rename the user agent as in a mobile device, e.g. for a nokia3230 it is.......Nokia3230/2.0 (3.0505.2) SymbianOS/7.0s Series60/2.1 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0.........faking a mobile device in this way will let u access some mobile websites (like Airtel or Vodafone) which specifically require a mobile device for browsing.

Restart Mozilla for your changes to take effect.

u can put just anything in place of a user agent, it could be a swear word, or a funny line or simply anything.

u can get a huge list of user agents for different platforms HERE

Diginet,
the preferences screenshot was from Mozilla Suite Browser (11.4 MB setup file). i think u r using Mozilla Firefox (4.93 MB setup file). u can access all the plugins setup from the FILE MENU, just go to TOOLS-->>EXTENSIONS. here u will find an entry for wmlbrowser 0.6.10 after u install wmlbrowser. click OPTIONS to setup wmlbrowser. to install wmlbrowser just extract the attached zip file and open the wmlbrowser plugin in Firefox, it will automatically prompt u for installation. u can also add WMLbrowser icon on the navigation toolbar by right clicking on the toolbar and selecting CUSTOMIZE.
hope this clears ur doubts.

User Agent Switcher
Posted: 02-07-2006, 02:07 PM
Here's another very important Plugin

User Agent Switcher

this will let u define custom User agents and select them from a drop down list as and when required. so u can change ur User Agent as many times as required while browsing. this makes it a lot easier to switch user agents than manually entering a new agent every time u need.

steps to install..........
1. download the zip file and extract. open the plugin in mozilla, it will prompt u for installation.
2. after it is installed, right click on the navigation toolbar to customize, here u can add an icon for UA switcher in the Nav bar.
3. goto preferences-------or goto tools-->>extensions to setup the switcher . here u can add new user profiles for example......mobile devices....PDAs, linux systems, MAC systems etc or something else......practically anything.

after switching , u can check the new user agent at http://useragent.org or from the about box of mozilla.

I have been looking for it. i have the user agent string for Nokia 6600 with me - Nokia6600/1.0 (4.09.1) SymbianOS/7.0s Series60/2.0 Profile/MIDP-2.0 Configuration/CLDC-1.0 - but i don't know how to set it. i need to brows masala.airtelworld.com with this, i am using airtel dialup connection. if i try to download some thing with this, does it count money.

Ajith_II,
u can enter nokia (or anything) string in the user agent switcher options menu and then select it from the drop down menu in the nav bar as shown in the screenshot. It is possible to browse airtel using airtel gprs dialup on PC, infact i myself am connected thru gprs dialup. But if u download anything directly from their website u'll surely be charged coz ur MSISDN will be recorded. I'll mention an alternate way to download without being charged. I have managed to break into airtel but found that most of the stuff is CRAP compared to what we have on gsmhacks. If u still want i can make a mirror of the airtel website and from there anybody frm any network can download without being charged. Only thing i need a little webspace. I'd be really thankful if some1 can provide me webspace for hosting airtel mirror. I know i can simply steal stuff from airtel and put it on some crappy download service like megaupload, rapidshare etc. but i want to host an exact mirror which i can update daily with respect to updates at airtel.

Ajith_II,
airtel live!/masala homepage source code at the moment has some script problem bcoz of this mozilla wont display the homepage. U can succesfully open all other pages from live!/masala portal in mozilla. An alternate way to open the airtel homepage on PC is to use the WAP Proof emulator posted by me. Open the homepage in wap proof and copy the other links from there to open them in mozilla.
