P800 Petition

I haven't seen this on here and I think it's important:
It's a petition to give UIQ 2.1 to the P800.

Unfortunately I don't think SonyEricsson will. They could add lots of things
to their old phone but they want people to trade in their P800's for £25 and
get a spangly new P900!

Why should SE do this for free?

Nah just a joke but no doubt if you took a P800 to CPW that's all they'd
give, unless the person behind the counter knew what it was and offered to
give you more.

But from a marketing point of view SE would like its users on a treadmil of
better and better phones. In my somewhat sceptical/paranoid opinion this
could be a reason for the design flaws in the T610. The screen, the tones
etc so next year they'll have something better and people will upgrade to
that....

Where does it ask for the upgrade for free? I'd be willing
to pay for the upgrade.

SE upgraded the T68 firmware several times - probably more than were needed.
Granted, they were contractually obliged to upgrade the T68 to T68i, as they
promised MMS (and the T68 original didn't yet offer it) - but they did add a
lot of other functionality too.

Try phoning SE Customer Support too - they'll usually answer within a couple
of rings, and are pretty helpful and knowledgable much of the time.

The upshot of this is that SE appear to offer excellent support for their
products, even when there's not an obvious immediate commercial driver (eg.
it's buggy!). And so one reason I bought SE again (T68/T610/P800) was
because I expected their seemingly genuine support for their products to
continue. I'm starting to wonder whether I was a little naive. As I see it,
there's two possible reasons why SE were so proactive with T68 upgrades:

1. They feel that to keep a dedicated user base, they should offer constant
feature updates, etc. so that users feel comfortable when buying a SE phone,
knowing that any initial niggles will be ironed out by SE, and new features
added. An SE phone becomes something you may actually keep for longer than
your minimum 12 month subsidised contract period.
2. The T68 was (too far?!) ahead of the game, and they didn't have any
significant new offerings for 18 months - while Nokia pump out a new
'Professional' phone every 3-5 months. So they kept updating the T68, trying
to keep the users interested, until they could rush the T610 out of the
door. Now that they're out of those woods, they'll scale back such support,
and you won't expect the same generosity again.

So... if (1) - then perhaps we'll see upgrades to the P800 (after the early
adopters have blown their hard-earned on a P900) available just after
Christmas. Let's face it - the P900 covers many of the niggles that annoy us
about the P800; but enough to buy a new one? I guess this would also depend
on how dependant the firmware is on the extra RAM.

If (2), then tough luck. Give it another 6 months, and you may be able to
sell the P800 and buy a P900 secondhand for a £50 difference (and a little
risk).

Naturally, I'm hoping it's (1). ( Don't p**s me off now, SE. )
