SE T610 - Text messaging US > UK

although whilst roaming you can recieve and make calls, not all the
providers that you pick up will let you send texts

you mentioned you where with orange, if memory serves, somewhere on their
website will tell you which of the US networks will let you send txts and
also the call costs of the various networks

Very likely the problem/solution.

Also check if the "service number" of the sms-service in your phone has the
international code in front of it (like +33 or whichever it is for UK).

In florida we could pick up T-Mobile and AT&T Wireless I had no
problem sending text messages from either network. T-Mobile are the
best network from my experience because a) they billed orange quickly,
I didn't get charged for my calls on AT&T till 2 months later when I
thought all my roaming costs were paid. and b) they have GPRS support
which orange haven't billed me for(shh!) - I used a couple of MB
checking emails and logging into instant messaging services using WAP.
Also some of my text messages on T-Mobile were free, I don't know how
they figured that out :-)

A quick note for those of you roaming in the US, the signal quality is
nowhere near as good as the UK but its good if your only using it for
SMS or calling whilst not moving (our phones were unusable to call
each other when we were driving across the state). GPRS was poor if I
could get a connection at all but I can hardly complain as I was not
billed for it.

I'm currently in San Antonio, TX - I'm picking up AT&T or T-Mobile
just fine - I can make calls and receive text messages - I just can't
send them :-(

All my numbers have the +44 in front of them as does my service
centre.

I can't find anywhere on the orange website that give me any further
information about roaming in the US and which networks charge what.

I'm back in the UK on Friday - I guess I need to take it up with
Orange then, hopefully I'll be able to sort it before I return in a
couple of weeks.

Maybe the networks you're connected to just don't support sending text
messages. You have to bear in mind that most Americans are still
walking around with house bricks for mobile phones and there is not
such a big demand for things like SMS and GPRS. On the Orange website,
only 3 of the 12 listed networks support sending of SMS. There are
several different networks running under the AT&T name from what I can
see so just because you get AT&T or T-Mobile in one state doesn't mean
you will get the same services in another :-(
