What software can one use for this? I have (and I'm not applying for the post
here...) some knowledge of music, and have made a few mono ringtones with both
logomamager and Nokia composer.
Now I have a poly phone and would like to have a go.

You may want to contact Max Krainov at Unwired Tec
http://www.convert-ringtones.com I believe he might be interested.

i think he mean developing actual ring tone from scratch and not just mere
conversion etc, it actually hardware/software combination with a midi
hardware keyboard interface with the computer. then you record natural voice
from a dog for instant then synthesise it each voice combine to make a
musical composition (i think poly rintones these days have 32 channel). if
anyone recall the good ol amiga500 intros, dont laugh but i still use amiga
for this hahaha...

Not much point recording real life sounds if you are creating polyphonic
ringtones for Mobile Phones - you are stuck with the sounds generated by the
phone. Of course, you could play back your dog samples on a P800 if you
wanted...

author MIDI, right Lina? ;o)

"Anvil Studio" has a free version for making MIDI files (limited functions,
but a good way to start). I use it to edit MIDIs for length, number of
instruments, etc, to optimize them for ringers.

MIDI is the "real" format to make them in, then you can probably find
conversion software for whatever format is unique to your phone.
Sony/Ericsson uses plain old MIDI.

Sounds like what I'm looking for.

MIDI is perfectly ok for uploading.
