P800 modem speed

I have a Malaysian P802, and go to Singapore pretty often. Unfortunately
there is no GPRS roaming agreement between Malaysia & Singapore, so I am
stuck with GSM. Singapore offers an Internet connection method where you just
dial *187 with a modem & the ISP charges go into your roaming phone bill. I
rang the help line & asked them the maximum speed & the operator said
"standard HSCSD". However, I can never get more than 9.6k out of the P800.

I don't suppose anyone would know any secret to getting it would they?

First off, you must have had HSCSD provisioned by your service provider and
while I can't speak for the P800, but if it's the same as the T610 edit the
"Data rate" setting of the data account that you're using to connect with to
28,800. Thats if you are using the built in e-mail client. If you are
connecting a laptop via the P800, you need to add one of the following to
the laptops modem initalisation string;

HSCSD
for 9,600bps add at+chsn=1,1,0,4
for 14,400bps add at+chsn=2,1,0,12
for 19,200bps add at+chsn=3,2,0,12
for 28,800bps add at+chsn=4,2,0,12

You may find that the network you're using offers v110 connections, which
offer much faster call setup, in which case use;

V.110 HSCSD
for 9,600bps add at+cbst=71,0,1;+chsn=1,1,0,4
for 14,400bps add at+cbst=75,0,1;+chsn=2,1,0,12
for 19,200bps add at+cbst=78,0,1;+chsn=3,2,0,12
for 28,800bps add at+cbst=79,0,1;+chsn=4,2,0,12

A bit of background, HSCSD works by stripping out some of the standard CSD
error correction to give a data rate of 14.4K the network then aggregates 2
data streams to give the 28.8K so you are effectively making 2 simultaneous
data calls.

that I can't be sure of, as I'm only roaming, and the operator didn't really
know much - not even what HSCSD stood for.

Yes, there is a data rate setting, and I've tried 28.8k - doesn't work. Pity.
For such a wired country, Singapore makes it surprisingly difficult for
tourists to get Internet access. My only choice is to wire up to a box in the
hotel for S$36/day!
