P800 Problems Update, (Was "Cell phone problems, Ericsson is ignoring me").

Hi,

Just an update for those of you who care, i came back from my business trip,
and removed McAfee AV as suggested, (by a few of you).

I then installed the Sony/Ericsson software, (the latest), and it all worked
fine, (i played around with it quite a bit to make sure).

I then re-installed McAfee, (and the firewall), and it still seem to work
fine.

The firewall gave me about 20 warnings, (at least), about different apps
trying to access my USB ports and/or Internet.

I allowed all the apps to connect as they please and never to ask me again
about it. And it still works fine.

I can only assume that my firewall was blocking some Sony/Ericsson
programmes from even starting and in turn they were causing a crash.

Although it works, i think i should point out that i will not buy a
Sony/Ericsson phone in future as they have still not contacted me and poor
customer support is quite bad for a company that size. I am just being
realistic; i cannot afford to take another chance in future.

It is debatable whether Sony was at fault or not, i do not really think they
were, (after all they do not control the Firewall/AV), but i think that
their support is shocking and that they should spend a few minutes testing
with some of the biggest software. McAfee is, after all, quite well known
app.

And for those of you that claimed to be professionals and advised me to 1)
Format my Drive ,2) Buy a new PC, 3) Remove everything on my PC or even 4)
Ignore it(!?!), i would strongly advise you to shut up in future as some
people might listen to your crappy advises and loose valuable data.

If you do not know what you are talking about, simply shut-up. There is no
shame is admitting you do not know something on the subject, you are not
technicians for a reason.

You are being very unfair. The whole point of contributing to a newsgroup is
not that you are an expert - if you need an expert/technician go find one
and pay his hourly rate! You got your advice (and solution, ultimately) for
free, so have a little charity for those who tried to help you.

My original post was asking uk.legal what i should do regarding the software
problems i was having as the phone was of no use to me if it was not
working, (the software, not the hardware).
Sony is ignoring my emails so i wanted to know if i would be entitled to
return the phone and expect a refund.

I am in the UK so i thought that uk.legal would be the right place to ask.

Fair point, but some people were insulting because i was not willing to
accept their advices.
When i repeatedly said that i was not going to format my drive i was told i
was stupid and never to ask for help again, (i got a few other colourful
comments that in turn caused me to lower myself to their level).

I am always grateful for any help i can get but people should also not get
insulted if i, or others, do not agree with their idea.
If a non technical person wants to offer help then i will listen but not
necessarily follow their advice, along the same line i do not expect someone
who offers help to become rude if i disagree with their non-technical
advice.

BTW, i originally did not ask for Technical help but more how i could get
Sony to reply to my mails, (and if that did not work get help from a legal
point of view as the phone was of no use to me without the software).

From what I remembered of the thread you were adamant that the software was
at fault and that your computer was not the problem. The general advice
given ISTR was that you had a software conflict and that you should
uninstall/install programs until you found the conflict.
You were given lots of differing advice and it was up to you to pick the
advice you wanted to follow (if any). Eventually it seems that you grasped
that your computer might have software conflicts. This was amongst the
advice you received for free on a public forum. Any of the advice from 1),
2), or 3) above would also have worked for you and if you kept sufficient
backups of your data would not have resulted in any valuable data loss.
You seem to believe that a huge company *have* to immediately respond to a
problem that ultimately (and easily) you could and should have sorted
yourself.

Not quite right.
I do expect them to acknowledge my mail. Even if they had told me to get
lost it would have been better than nothing.

I simply said what i did to fix my problem and added that Sony/Erisson had a
very poor customer support.

i didnt see your previous post, but you sure sound like a whining little
bitch from this one.
re: firewalls. why the fuck are you using one. nothing worse than clueless
computer illiterates running bloatware firewalls fucking up various
applications and asking for help. if you dont know how to use your firewall,
you dont need one. noone is out to get you, despite the thousand warnings it
might pick up on everyday.
re: tech support from usenet. this is a PUBLIC UNMODERATED newsgroup. the
suggestions you mentioned were all (most, beyond the obvious comedy) very
valid. who would be stupid enough to not backup everything before
formatting, esp. if your computer is still very usable. if you installed se
software first and it worked, you could have figured out what app was
causing the conflict by installing everything else one by one. sorry that
not everyone is out to help YOU out.
