Ericsson T39 -- T9 text input and Chinese text

Posted: 09-27-2003, 12:50 AM
Hi, I'm new here so sorry in advance if this is a dumb and/or frequently
asked and replied to question (though I searched the last few months of
posts and didn't see anything)

Here's the deal: I live in Los Angeles but I work frequently in China for
long stretches of time, sometimes up to 3 months. I want to buy a mobile
which will work in both places, and I don't care about a color screen or a
camera or anything like that. My main concerns are voice calls and text
messages. After searching around and reading up on things, I've settled on
the Ericsson T39 as the phone for my needs. It seems that used ones are
available regularly on ebay these days for about $120, so I'm planning to
get one soon.

However, in a couple of reviews (on Cnet and on epinions) I've come across
about this phone I've seen it mentioned that there is a difference between
the T39 m and the T39 mc (the "c" apparently standing for Chinese). What
I've read is that the T39 mc can input and display Chinese text messages,
but it does not have the T9 predictive text input system for English. On the
other hand, the T39 m has T9 input, but does not support display of Chinese
characters.

The ideal situation for me would be to have both Chinese display and input,
and also T9 input for English.

Does anyone happen to know whether what I read on these review sites is
correct?

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

I'm very much looking forward to trying one of these phones.

Paul D.

It is correct. T39mc does not have English T9.

How strange. Can you recommend a phone that does have both these functions?

thanks,

Paul

The replacement for T39mc... T68i or T610/T618, the one that replaced
T68i, but has to be one that has Chinese language firmware. These are
only available for purchase in applicable Asian places. And note that
there are two Chinese versions, simplified vs Traditional. But you can
have any T68i's firmware flashed to Chinese/English at a charge.
