T610 - Slow? P800 - Worth it? (HELP ME!)

Posted: 08-18-2003, 10:42 PM
Hi
I'm still trying to decide what I should get as my new phone (to replace my
Nokia 7650), I played with a few in a shop today...

I was originally planning on getting a P800, but I'm not sure if it's really
worth the money... As a phone, it seems a bit cumbersome and writing text
messages seems to be a bit of a chore (does it get faster once you're used
to scribbling?) I might get annoyed not having the option of predictive text
input... The P800 is pretty great, but I don't want to blow loads of money
on it as next year I'll probably end up getting something 3G compatible like
the Z1010... Can anyone change my mind back towardss the P800

Then I played with a T610 and it seemed fine, just slow to respond. I was
getting annoyed writing a text message and waiting for it to catch up with
me, is there a firmware release available (or out soon) that brings it up to
speed, I want something as responsive as my 7650 was...

The Nokia 3300 I considered for a bit, but it looks like a Game Boy Advance
and I don't think i'd get on with it that well with its strange layout...

Then I considered the 3G Motorolla one, the A810 I think... I couldn't try
it, none in stock, any experience of these? I've heard the battery life is
poor...

As you can see I'm very confused, any advice appreciated...

I was in the same boat as you. I had/have a 7650.

I went and got a '3' phone, the Motorola A830 is the one you're talking
about I think. DO NOT GET THIS PHONE! I cannot stress this enough. If you
need to rely on your phone, don't get this one. It is shite. It is very user
unfriendly, especially coming from a 7650 environment. Mine lasts about 14
hours with little use. They restart randomly. the network is shit, so you
get call drop outs. SOme calls dont even get through to you and you won't
know it until the person trying to call you, sees you and tells you.I only
use it for calls to my GF who has one as well, so we get free calls.

I just bought the T610 to replace my 7650, cos I gotta carry around my '3'
phone as well. It is a pleasure to use. The lag factor has not bothered me
the more I use it. I was a bit worried about sms'ing, but if you keep your
head down and type like you would on any T9 predictive text phone, it all
catches up anyway.

Believe me, I didn't realise how much I would miss T9 until I tried to sms
with my Motorola. What a pig!

As for the P800....I dunno....I never liked it. Yes it may be functionally
better than the 7650, but it looks like a toy! I would be more inclined
towards the replacement for the 7650 (cant remember the model).

The z1010 looks awesome, and that is the phone I will probably get next to
replace my current '3' phone. Hopefully, the network will have sorted itself
out by then.

In the meantime, I would definately take the T610. It really is a pleasure
to use. So nice to have a small phone again. Syncs so easily to PC. I
remember having huge problems getting my 7650 to work with Bluetooth.

The Nokia 7650 is a hot phone. Why dump it?

No.

The SE phones *classically* are slow responders compared to Nokias. Your
complaint is extremely common.

It's a garbage phone.

The hottest phone on the market right now is the Samsung SPH-i500, but it's
CDMA/AMPS only.

If you can wait for the Nokia 6600, that looks to be one hot phone.

Thanks! That's one crossed off the list... On first imspection it seems
ideal, but I can't find anyone saying nice things about it

I believe the 3650 is designed as the 7650 replacement, but it's got the
most ridiculous key layout... The 7250 is pretty similar too, but I just
don't like the look of it much... The forthcoming 6600 might be pretty well
suited though...

Thanks for your input, I'll try the T610 again and see if i can get the hang
of it...

Yeah, the 3650 is ruined by the stupid design. 6600 is the one I was
refering to. However, it is still quite big, and looks a bit odd (a bit
fat). But that is personal taste.

I don't really see the benefit of the 6600 over the 7650. The main
advangtage is the memory card. However, I never actually ran out of memory
on my 7650. It is cool to be able to carry around mp3s and video clips (as I
do with my A830), but the novelty wears off very quickly.

My feeling is, that my t610 does pretty much everything the 6600 does so
some extent.

I guess it depends on what you need from your phone. I am definately not
someone who buys a phone based on what I really need it for. I always over
compensate and get something with the bells and whistles.

I've just discovered that the T610 has just 2MB of memory, half that of the
7650... I think I'm going to stick with my 7650 a little longer and see what
I can get in a few months... Thanks for all your help though!

In fact, it is less than 2M as the memory is a shared memory.

On my 7650, I usually have about 30 photos stored (from a night out) then
Puzzle Bobble (my favourite mobile game) and Video Recorder... Plus some
saved SMS/MMS and other bits'n'bobs...
