T610 midi - please explain

Posted: 08-01-2003, 12:11 PM
Can somebody explain, in plain english, about midi ringtones on the T610.

Particularly I understand that it can cope with midi files of more 'depth'
than other phones.

Is midi the only format that can be sent to the phone and how do I convert a
segment of an MP3 to midi to use as a polyphonic ringtone.

Thanks

Steve

I expect that by "depth" they are talking about the number of
notes/instruments playing simultaneously. I have not had the chance to
compare the T610 in any detail, but I was quite impressed by the MIDI
playback of the T300, it did a nice job even with fairly complex MIDI files.

Forget about converting MP3 or WAV to MIDI, it is kind of theoretically
possible but not an option in a real life situation. You can find most
songs, old and new, in MIDI format (varying quality mind you) on line. Bear
in mind that most MIDI files will not have been optimised for mobile phones
so you may find they are a little quiet or whatever.

If you already have a T610, I can only suggest you give it a go - MIDI
files are nice and small compared to MP3 or WAV )

Excellent and thanks. I'm interested in how these online midi files are made
to be honest and I have a couple of 'obscure' tracks on MP3 which I would
like to put on the phone. Not a problem though, as you say, there's plenty
to choose from out there.

MIDI is a whole big subjecton its own but there is plenty of information
online. It would be possible, with a little effort, to learn some basics and
pick up some shareware that would allow you do make minor changes in MIDI
files so they played back better on a phone. Alternatively, I am guessing
there are some sites with MIDI files designed for your mobile anyways.

The way to think of it is MIDI is just instructions on how the playback
device (in this case the phone) should play - which notes, which instruments
etc etc. Exactly how it sounds depends on the device as the sound is
generated within the device Load the same MIDI file to two different types
of mobile phone and in windows and you will get three different versions of
the same song. They will be similar but no where near identical.
MP3 and WAV are actual recordings ie they contain information about the
sound which is why they are so much bigger
