How to verify a SE T200 has been unlocked?

Posted: 06-25-2003, 11:39 PM
Thanks to the tip from "Edward S", earlier today I went to that local K and
K mobile phone shop and paid $30 Canadian (about $22 U.S.) to have my
SonyEricsson T200 unlocked. The guy in the shop told to leave the phone in
the shop and the unlocking would be done in about 30 minutes. So 30 minutes
later I went back to the shop and was told the unlocking was done.

Now my question is how do I verify the phone has been indeed unlocked (such
as by checking some setting from the phone's menu)? I intend to use the
unlocked T200 in Shanghai China soon with a locally purchased SIM card in
Shanghai so I don't have to pay for international roaming for a local call
in Shanghai. Also I hope the shop didn't do anything bad to me phone (such
as copying down my phone and/or Fido SIM serial numbers, etc. Fido is my
current mobile phone service provider here in Toronto, by the way).

enter the key sequence ( < > correspond to the navigation key)

< * * <

The 3 padlocks should be open (it's only 1 pixel).

Or the key sequence

> * < < * < *

Service Info -> SIM lock ... the 4 padlocks should be open.

Edward,

Ok, the first pad lock "Network" looks like open with "MNC2" as the
selected. ("MNC3" not selected")
The second pad lock "Network Subset" looks like open with "MNC2" as the
selected. ("MNC3" not selected")
And the thrid pad lock "SP" looks like open with "MNC2" as the selected.
("MNC3" not selected")

Does this make sense?

Thanks again,
James

By the way I also checked the Service Info and it looks to me as all four
(Network, Network Subset, Service Provider and Corporate) are unclocked,
each with the number "5" displayed. What does this "5" means?

Thanks

You are allowed 5 attempts at the locks. After that, the phone is
"permanently" locked. "Permanent" is relative.

Edward,

Thanks again. Now I must admit you are a real guru on SonyEricsson :-)

When you have roaming enabled and are in a foreigh jurisdiction, for a
local call you pay just local rates; roaming rates apply when you call
overseas or are called, even by locals.
This is how GSM works.

That's the way it could/should work. Unfortunately, in practice you
end up paying whatever your home operator feels like charging you.
Some operators now make no distinction between making a local call and
a call back to your own country or a third country.
