Phone "not connected" - grrrrr

Posted: 03-06-2006, 04:00 PM
Hi everyone

I have just reinstalled Windows, and installed PC Suite so that I can
continue to use my P910i with Outlook. But my phone is persistently shown
as 'Not Connected' even when it is. Here are some details:

After installing PC Suite, I connected the USB base station and Windows
auto-detects my new hardware. It downloads and installs software for a
'SEMC DSS-20 SyncStation Driver' (is this right, if I have already installed
PC Suite?). It then auto-detects a 'USB Serial Port' which it fails to find
software for, and which ends up listed under 'Other devices' in Device
Manager with an exclamation mark over it. After this imperfect
installation, and there is no animation in the task bar when I put my phone
on the base station, and my P910i isn't recognised by my PC. When I
uninstall all of the software and unplug the base station, the mysterious
'USB Serial Port' goes away again too. I've tried installing the software
and plugging in the hardware in different orders, but with no luck. I even
uninstalled my firewall and reinstalled the SE software, just in case there
was some kind of conflict, but this didn't work either.

Does anyone have any tips on what I could try to get this working? On a
virgin Windows install, this is very frustrating, and I'm running out of
things to try here.

Thanks for any help you can give.

Ben

It should detect the USB serial port, did you leave the CD in the drive? You
need that installed to get the thing to work. I'm not sure with Windows 98,
but you do need the SEMC DSS...... driver as installed.

You could try putting the CD back in and updating the driver manually and
simply point the device manager in the direction of the CD.

It may also be possible that the installation routine can't allocate a Com
port for the USB driver, I've had tihs before if there is any other software
that hogs the various Com ports, such as a Bluetooth card etc.

Thanks Martin. I actually just installed PC Suite as a software download,
rather than using the CD. I'm not sure I still have the old CD anywhere,
but I'll hunt around for it. Do you think the exe file without the CD might
not be sufficient?

the PC Suite and the Drivers for the DSS-20 are separate downloads. Go
to the SE Site and download them.

Good luck.

installed that, and it works great. Thanks for helping! I can sleep easily
now...

SE have a lot to learn about connection software, I've never had problems
with MS Activesync.
