K700i re-starting itself

Posted: 01-24-2006, 03:27 PM
Any ideas?

A week ago my K700i started to spontaneously reset itself - the screen
flashes blank a few times, and then it restarts.

Further: I now know it's resetting itself *exactly* every 10.5 minutes
(give or take a few seconds).

Anyone seen this phenomenon before? I've gone through all the settings I
can think of, removed the battery a couple of times and I've emailed
Sony Ericsson (whose website is *excellent*, but no help in this case).

Unfortunately the phone is out of warranty, so I'd need to send it away
for repair without knowing what it will cost ... hence the cheapo option
of Usenet here, first.

BAD ADVICE - I WOULDN'T DO THAT AT ALL!

If the phone crashes in the middle of flashing the update, it is rendered
totally useless. Do NOT try to upgrade an unstable phone!

Bring it to a SE servicecenter. And I hope for you that the phone is stil in
warranty. If not, consider very carefully not to waste too much money on a
"dead duck"!

By the way I have just replaced my own K700i with a new K600i.
My phone HAD the newest software installed and was nevertheless highly
unstable. Currently it even doesn't start up any more. It is in an endless
loop of reboots!

I have had a t610 (crap reception), and a k700i ( too instable, especially
re. bluetooth and when the reception quality is poor/disappearing). My son
a F500 (twice dead joystick) and a t230 (dead keyboard).

And our common conclusion is that the SE hardware is total utter crap.

In terms of features, usability and value for money, ON PAPER, SE is very
good.

Then why did I buy yet another SE phone you may ask?

The answer is, that I have accumulated too many SE specific accessories that
I could just throw away if changing to f.ex. Nokia.

Best regards

Jan

True but only with SEUS. Best option is davinci or Total multi server.
Buy a credit and flash to the latest firmware. They _specifically_ claim
to cure blinking phones. Even if it doesn't work it's only a fiver or so
lost.

Well a tenner lost!
Since I considered my K700i a total loss, I just tried Total Multi Server.
I did the recovery and flashed the newest firmware. According to the client
program all went well.
However the phone still crashes during searching for a network, a couple of
seconds later, or first time a press a key.

So far so bad

Update:
This is interesting.
Just for the hell of it I hooked the phone up to my PC with a dumb ol'
usb cable. For unknown reasons the phone didn't crash now.
I removed it from the usb cable and it began crashing again.
I hooked it up to the pc with aforementioned cable and it didn't
crash. I did a total reset to factory settings.

NOW THE PHONE APPEARS TO BE STABLE AND WORKING????????
I'm baffeld

The question is of course if a "reset to factory settings" would have done
the trick in the first place.

Regards
Jan

The total reset to factory settings should _always_ be carried out after
an update. Doesn't it say so on the tms website/client?

Yes, but only if you click on a little blue questionmark next to the Brand &
Model drop-down menus in the client app. I didn't !
