Cell phone extensions design

I need some basic directions...
I want to create a device that connects to a cellphone through the carkit
socket, and activates the phone features. Something that works like the
Nokia keyboard that plugs in and lets you type SMS messages easily.
My questions are:
A. Are all Motorola/Nokia cell phones using the same protocol? If I create
such a device, will it work on more then one model (even if the connector
itself has to be replaces)? Does all the models have the same comm.
protocol? If not, what would be the best model to experience with?
B. Where can I find such comm. protocols, so I can access the phone
features?
C. Can a regular PC connector be used to test such protocol? To send direct
commands to the phone, and try to activate it externally? Or should I be
using another device for the test?
Any hints or directions for further reading will be appreciated...
