It depends on your carrier, but here in Europe practically every SP offers the possibility to write SMS's (that's what they're called here, comes from "short message service") to a phone from their network for free. Just take a look. M.

If you have AOL Instant Messenger, you can go to "Send Instant Message" and instead of a screen name, type +1 followed by the phone number (e.g. +18005551212). Jesse
