Remove the ISP-specific branding by normal people

Is there any way I can remove the branding my ISP has done to my phone?
I've read the other thread but it sounds really advanced...
Can I send in my phone to get it updated and then tell'em to remove the
branding?
How about the 12/13-second trick or whatever it is... what does it do and
what's in it for me?
