O2 and Sony-Ericsson service

Posted: 02-04-2004, 11:51 AM
Dear All,

Just thought I'd post a praise for once (hence crossposting - apologies, but
there is never enough of good news).

My P900 was not happy, not wanting to play (Bluetooth and some
applications). It started before Christmas and was getting worse over the
next two weeks.

Called S-E support, they recommended firmware upgrade (nice and helpful
techs there). Called my local O2 shop in Lancaster, dropped the phone off on
Monday, they warned me it might take two weeks or so, but on Thursday the
same week they called me asking to collect the phone. All very nice and
helpful at all stages.
S-E even did a backup and restore of the phone in the process. Great
service.

Phone now unbranded <grin>, with the very newest firmware and works like a
dream (or even as it was supposed to).

All the best,

W.

Hi there,

Next time you could just take it to a SE service centre like Carphone
Warehouse or The Link who will do the same job while you wait well it
normally takes about an hour.

Of course you can now just update the firmware off the SE web site.

Tim.

Hi there,

SE site\Support in Product Finder type in P900 click on P900 below where you
typed P900 then on next page click on Global Support 6th item down on
right-hand side Sony Ericsson Update Service.

Tim.

probably because it was a warrantee repair and a home repair if it had
gone wrong would make the warrantee null and void ?

Because I was only able to update the top level firmware, the organiser
part. The other part (level dealing with hardware) is apparently only
accessible to Sony-Ericsson. This includes the branding bits. This is what I
worked out from various NG and other sources including the info on the
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/xerodiac.

In fact I did try the home update service and it was leaving the main
software version as it was, and only updating the organiser (the problems
persisted), which would support what I read.

Am I missing anything (wouldn't be surprised). Please do let me know, as the
next time round I might do it myself.

Best wishes,

W.

Because that only updates that phone's particular branded firmware.

If o2 haven't bothered to upload an updated version of their particular
firmware (which they haven't) there is nothing to update.

Hi there,

If you have an o2 or Orange branded phone it would appear that you have to
have the first update which removes the brandware done at a SE service
centre like CPW or The Link there may be others and it should be free, they
get paid by SE for every phone they update.

From there on you can thereafter update the phone yourself if you wish via
the web or take it back to a service centre and they will do it and it
should be free.

Try this site for help: http://www.esato.com/board/

Hope this helps, Tim.

I wonder how the unbrander managed to work before SE crippled it out of
order?

I had on O2 branded P900, which I used the Homeflash service to update to an
unbranded version.

Its legally akin to trying to upgrade a physical part and then
complaining when it doesn't work anymore.
