Posted: 01-14-2004, 03:57 PM
Hi all,
I have a new P800 and would like to sync it with my Palm Desktop. Can
anyone recommend a product to do this?

Thanks,
Jim

My understanding from Sony's website is that the P800 synchronizes
*only* with Microsoft Outlook, Lotus Notes, or Lotus Organizer.

Faced with the same problem of migrating from Palm Desktop, I chose
Organizer. To import my to do list, notes, and calendar from my Palm OS
PDA, a Palm Tungsten T, into Organizer's database, I used the EasySync
synchronization software that ships with Organizer *just once*. I keep my
contacts in a dBase III+ (believe it or not) database. I exported this
contact as CSV text and imported the CSV into Organizer. Then I installed
Sony's PC Suite to synchronize Organizer with the P800. Voila! ... Almost.
While most of the data made it into Organizer and the P800, some did not.
On upload from the Tungsten T, Palm note fields within to do list records
were appended to the Organizer to do name, and then, on download to the
P800, truncated to roughly 190 characters.

I use both the Organizer and P800 contacts, calendar, notepad (jotter), and
to do (tasks) applications extensively. I have not had problems with the
first three applications. However, there are significant limitations in the
to do list functionality of Organizer coupled with the P800:
(a) Organizer allows tasks to be assigned only 1 of 4
priorities (priorities 1-3 and no priority), so although the P800
task
application supports 9 priorities, you can't enter a priority greater
than 3 in Organizer;
(b) Organizer lacks a note field in its task record corresponding to the
note
field in the P800 task record;and
(c) Organizer lacks support for the P800's task folders. The P800 allows
tasks to be assigned to folders, each with a customizable
name. Organizer allows tasks to be assigned to categories,
each with a customizable name, but
on synchronization does not map P800 task folders to or from
Organizer task categories.

In addition, the P800, PC Suite, and Organizer interface *solely* through
the Organizer data file. So, after making changes on your P800 and
synchronizing, you must reopen the Organizer data file so the changes are
shown on screen.

HTH.

Don

Today we can sync using vcards and SMS and willbe extending this to
include GPRS as the transport layer very soon
