A tale of two sims

put my existing Orange sim card into the phone and it works fine. The new
unused sim card states that it is valid until 2008. If I were to put this
new sim into the phone and register it with a new number does this mean I
can use either card in the phone or will the 2nd card effectively render my
original card useless?
Any thoughts please?
