5190 Battery doesn't charge

I keep an old unlocked Nokia 5190 GSM phone as a standby, plugging the
charger in once every 2/3 weeks or so to keep the battery (original) topped
up.

When I plug it in now, it gives a beep after a few seconds and comes up with
"Not Charging" on the display. I cleaned out the contacts with a cleaning
solution but I still get the same warning.

Besides a dying battery, could there be any other possible reason for this,
that I could look at? I just wanted to know before sending for a new one.
The charger works fine - tested on another Nokia phone.

check your charger. nokia 5190 don't take any charger. it only take
nokia charger model acp-7u with 3.7V dc output. if you have acp-8u or
acp-12u it's not gonna work. it will charge for a second and then it
will shut the charging off.

By golly you are absolutely right! Thanks a lot.

I had never checked the charger! It is the ACP-12U that I have now. This
replaced the earlier one (had to replace it as the cord got cut off
accidentally) and it was the ACP-7U type - its still on my workshelf. I will
get a new one of those pronto.

Actually I meant I never checked the model number! And I also found out that
the present charger was part of the package with the other Nokia (in the
family) I checked it on - so it would certainly work on it fine! DUH me!

Thanks - it was unlocked when I purchased it on eBay a few months ago (for $
8.00). I tested it using SIM cards from Cingular and T-Mobile. Works
perfectly. I keep it as a back-up for my T-Mobile Siemens CT62T (also from
eBay) which seems too delicate most times!
