Nokia 3100 AIM Error Message

My pre-installed instant messenger application will not start up. The phone states that the program is running in the background, and when you quit, it states "application error". The details show com/nokia/mid/impl/isa/ui/MIDletDestroyFailedException. I cant get the application to stop running, I cant get access to it. I cant seem to reset the phone, removing the battery does not stop the app.

What do I do? Is there a way to manually reset the phone? And if I do so, will I lose my contact info? No big deal, I can write it down and re-enter it if it will...

HELP!
