NK 6600 upgraded from Orange 4.09.1 to generic 5.27.0!!

Posted: 10-31-2004, 12:56 AM
Yesterday I took my Orange branded 6600 to my usual Club Nokia
authorized service centre to have the firmware upgraded from 4.09.1
(orange customized) to 5.27.0. When i picked up the phone I was
expecting an orange customized 5.27 (not a problem to me) but to my
surprise they said they've put the standard generic 5.27 firmware on!
Brilliant. So, the talk on these newsgroups about the automatic
firmware choosing devices service centres use is prob just crap!

All depends if the engineer followed Cub Nokia policy,
and used expensive Nokia hardware, or not?

Then risk Nokia sanctions, there are many cheap unofficial
DCT4 hardware options these days.

I would not have thought that a main Nokia Service Centre would be
using cheap unofficial hardware!

Neither would I TBH, but stranger things have been known. I think this is
more likely a case of a genuine mistake being made, or there being a problem
with the customised PPM belonging to the version of the MCU that was
flashed - hence the generic PPM being flashed instead. Some (not many
though) CNSC's will put unbranded firmware on a branded handset, but they'll
keep very quiet about it given the possible ramifications if Nokia ever
found out.

As i said earlier, i took the phone in and just asked them to upgrade
the firmware, i didn't ask for a generic firmware as the orange
branding on the 6600 isn't at all bad. When i picked up the phone they
didn't keep it a secret, she told me they'd put a generic firmware on,
fine by me.

They probably don't in all truth, however, the networks obviously do care
(or they wouldn't bastardise handsets in the first place), and Nokia will
care how many phones they sell to the networks - so in other words they
won't do anything to upset the networks.

Absolutely, don't look a gift horse in the mouth and all that.

It's quite straightforward really, network operators are by far and away
Nokia's biggest customer. Therefore Nokia does what the customer
(network operator - you are merely an 'end-user') tell them to, and that
usually includes directives along the lines of "thou shalt flash end-
user handsets with whatever we tell thee to"

Couldn't agree more, but I can't see it changing in the near future.
