6600 covers

I asked in the Service Centre while getting my phone flashed, and the
guy showed me the special tool for ing the case on a 6600, which
is a pretty amazing device. He reckoned it was nigh on impossible to
do it right without the tool (although I've seen a few sites with
instructions). He also said that when people had bought in covers
they had purchased on EBay, that they were usually poor copies that
didn't fit properly.

Now, you could say "he would say that, wouldn't he?" and that's a fair
comment, and I'd be interested to hear if people have succeeded in
fitting covers themselves, and what the covers bought on EBay are
like.

But I asked how much a genuine cover fitted was and was told £30, so I
think when mine gets too scratched I'll probably go down that route.

I just installed one that I had bought. It was really tuff. I also
damaged some of the plastics on the phone. Nothing major, just some
blemishes that would drive a perfectionist crazy. The reason I was
replacing it was because of a large scratch in my screen. So it is 100%
better now.

I also just bought one of the rubber/velvet faceplates off ebay. So I
guess I will be doing it again in about 5 days.

I think once you have done it the first time, it will be a lot easier
down the road. You know where the snaps and stuff are. I tried my
hardest to find anything about it online with no luck. If anyone has a
website address, please post it. Tips or anything. I used a
pocketknife, it wasn't the greatest but it did the job.

Ouch! Don't use a pocket knife, as you've found out the hard way, you'll
damage the housing. There are dismantle instructions for most Nokias at the
UselessInfo site in my sig, but I'm the first to admit that the 6600 is a
pain to dismantle.

Not a problem. Most Nokias are pretty easy to dismantle, but there are one
or two that are a bit awkward. I originally built the site after having
problems dismantling a 6310 (and breaking the clips) and finding that there
didn't seem to be anywhere online that gathered the information in one
place. It's nice to be able to give something back to the community instead
of just making money from it.

You really need to be careful about buying facias from eBay, or
anywhere else for that matter as despite the packaging the vast
majority are fakes.
I have found a supplier who sells original OEM facias in silver,
gold,rose - ie the ONLY original colours available.
I have just made an large order and will be selling them shortly on
eBay to see how they go. The kits will include the front facia, rear
cover, keypad and semicirle - ie all the parts except the main frame.
I had doubts about changing at first but once you have the facia in
your hand you can see where the clips are and then its a doddle if you
use one of the facia removal tools.

why? how do I know? Take a look at thew 6600 facias - easy - Nokia
don't do a black one!
Now look at the 6310 facias - where are the vibrate motors that should
be included on the rear of the front facia and everyone will tell you
the fakes don't include them - as in this case.

After a while you can easily tell the fakes - DON'Y TAKE ANY NOTICE OF
THE PACKAGING which is nearly always fake and most of the original
Nokia facias that only come as 'in box' colours are never packaged.
