items are needed to update my 6600 from V3.38.3 22-09-03 NHL-10 IN TERMS OF

You're going to need a decent flashing solution for starters. Twister is
the best, but you could also use Prodigy or Griffin.
what do you mean in plain terms that a novice like me can understand

You need a "flasher box" such as http://www.gsm-solutions.co.uk/twister.htm
along with this you'll get access to a support area to download the software
you'll need to flash your phone.
They will smile at you profusely, and effect an upgrade free of charge (as
long as phone in warranty period.

Prodigy is the cheapest flashing box (and the least versatile) at about
£100 - £150. Twister is the best and most versatile box (and the only one
that flashes card phones) at about £200.

eek 542.542 AUD, I'd rather pay the service fee if I didn't have a warranty.
I mean I only had to pay 200 AUD for a smart card RW for sat cards, I
wouldn't pay more than that, especially if I can get the phone updates for
free.

Mosquito repellents don't repel. They hide you. The spray blocks the
mosquito's sensors so they don't know you're there.

Think yourself lucky, I still remember the days when we were paying 10 times
that amount for professional flashing solution.

I agree that it's overkill for hobbyist use, but I don't think you can
compare sat cards with mobile phones - mobiles are waaaay more complex. As
for getting the updates for free, strictly you won't if you just want it
flashed for the sake of having the latest firmware. If you can demonstrate
that you're having problems (not difficult on a Nokia) then it should be
covered.
