MIDI to Tone problems

Hi all

I have a 6820 with which I use the Sound Converter software to import MIDI's
by IR, which mostly works fine.

However, some MIDI files refuse to play when actually in the phone, it gives
an error msg 'Cannot Open File'. These same problematic MIDI files, when
transferred straight to a Motorola phone, work perfectly.

Is there some system command within the MIDI which Nokia doesn't like? If
so, you'd think the Sound Converter would pick them out. I have also tried
MIDIscale but get the same issue.

Anyone have a clue?

Same problem on 7250 - I've posted some infoe to help folks out and
sent Nokia and Oxygen a request for help.
I think the problem is something to do with SP-Midi being different
from normal Midi. I even used Nokia's PC Suite to convert my midi
files to polyphonic. played it in PC SUite and saved it there. All
worked fine but then had to use Oxygen to transfer and although it got
to the phone I had exactly ythe same problem as you did. I'll post an
answer if I hear from Nokia or Oxygen. Crap PC Suite if it converst to
something that won't work !!!

I'm trying to get Nokia's site to even accept my query!

I can't understand why the PC Suite program doesn't convert to a format even
its own phone can recognise. I'd have thought it would convert to SP Midi
as a matter of course.

What I've been doing is to suck the MIDIs back out of the phone by IR, then
I've posted them on my website so they can be accessed by GPRS/WAP. This is
how I know the exact same file works on a Motorola handset!

We await news from Nokia!!

Here's a good one -

I sent the information to Oxygen as I have the same error as you.

Guess what ....

They said
Maybe the files are incompatible with the phone

D'oh! Brilliant and really helpful. I'm still trying to identify a common
thread - i.e. is it a different MIDI format, or number of tracks/channels,
or GM/XG Midi but I really don't know enough about it. Needs a MIDI expert
probably. My query's in a at Nokia so I'll wait to hear from them (maybe!)

I found the problem was either that the midi files had too many
tracks- as different phones have different max polyphony levels- or
that they had instruments the phone did not recognise.

I gave up on Nokia's software and went for PolyPhonix which lets me
select the phone profile and then assists in sorting out to SP-Midi
which the phone accepts. I can prioritise the tracks, crop the file
and delete instruments. Best bit- it lets be transfer straight to the
phone. I vote that PolyPhonix is one of the best pieces of software
for editing the midi files specifically for Nokia phones and
transferring them to the phone.

Nokia have been similarly helpful, bless them. They said that I can use the
Nokia Sound converter to convert MIDI tracks into SP MIDI to upload to the
phone. Really? Well I never! They seem to have completely missed the
point that this is what I've been bloody well trying to do, and the sodding
phone won't play the tracks! I've now tested the converted SP MIDIs on 2
Motorolas and a Sony Ericsson K700 and they all work perfectly. It's just
Nokia.

I await further news from them.
