Smart Device (phone) - Anyone use these?

Posted: 04-25-2004, 10:41 PM
My new job will entail fairly extensive travel in the northeastern part
of the US. NY, NJ, PA, MA, etc. I currently use Sprint as a wireless
provider and am thinking about getting a Smart Device (phone). Anyone
use these -

I am leaning towards the Treo 600, I know a couple of people who have
one and they like it. I sort of would like one that uses Win CE, but
don't know anyone who's tried a Smart Device that uses that OS.

My PDA uses the Palm OS so I am equally familiar with both operating
systems. Most important to me is ease of use, ease of sync'ing it to my
laptop and call quality/clarity. I also don't want to have to carry a
PDA *and* a cell phone anymore.

All opinions welcomed. Would like to hear pros/cons and experiences
people have had with Smart Devices.

Sprint charges double for Vision on a Win CE phone.

Palm phones are not 100% compatible as a Palm, and every once in a while
some third party app won't function like you expect, or cause lockups.

Most folks who use the Treo 600 really like it.

It has a few possible drawbacks.

1. The phone does not have analog capability. You get in the boonies in
Connecticut for instance away from the main roads, you have no Service.

2. The camera is been rated as poor.

3. The Palm screen resolution is 160 x 160, not 320 x 320 like most
current Palms, or Clies or Palm phones due out in the fall.

4. It uses Palm OS 5.0 and thus no existing Blue Tooth adapter works
with it.

5. It's pricey.

Only you can decide if those factors might negatively impact you.

When you say "double for Vision" could you be more specific?

Hmmmmm.........not good.

Not that important, I already have a digital camera.

Hmmmm...........sounds like I should wait until Fall. What I really
don't want to do is buy a Smart Device and then have a better version
come out a couple months later.

I'm not too concerned with Blue Tooth. It's nice but it's not a
necessity.

My company will pay for it, so I don't mind.

Thanks for the input.

<snipped>

You might look for a phone that is smart enough to tell you not to post
phone questions to cooking and Sopranos newsgroups.

On the other hand you wait till fall, by then there'll still be a better
device on the horizon. If you like the Treo 600, go for it.

Is what may be available from Sprint in 6 months.

http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=173

is available from Verizon now.
