6820 AT&T mmode - can I email pictures instead of multimedia messaging?

Multimedia messaging costs $0.40 per picture on my AT&T mmode system.
But I can get email and send email for a lot less by paying for
bandwidth under a plan. Does anyone know if AT&T and the Nokia 6820
will permit me to attach pictures to emails instead of using the
multimedia messaging system? If so, I would appreciate a quick how?

nokia site says you cannot add attachments to emails, all phones are
configurated to work better with just text email
