If you're on a contract, you should be able to ask for a tri-band phone
upgrade. I did it to get a 6310i and it only cost 30 quid or so (was same
cost as hiring a tri-band handset for two weeks!!). Means that you know
it'll work and you don't have to wonder whether it'll work when you get back
then (the US are a bit weird with mobile phones). Just go for a cheap one
(i.e. the 6310i) rather than an all-singing-all-dancing new one.

Bear in mind also that GSM coverage in the US is somewhat marginal outside
of major cities and interstate routes. Also you're paying for incoming as
well as outgoing calls, plus if you're using a UK SIM card you'll be paying
roaming rates as well.

If you have a tri-band phone such as the 6310i you could get a PAYG SIM such
as the one from T-Mobile which costs $50 and includes $30 of calls.
