Hi Speed Data

I have an Orange phone that has been unlocked so as to use my work Vodafone
SIM. [insert usual rant about inferior sound quality and ridiculous
answerphone message notification compared to Orange!]

With Orange I had them enable a faster data service - Hi Speed Data or
something like that, and it came to me by way of a SIM update.

The work phone is through a third party service provider (another irritating
quirk I wasn't used to with Orange!) who are just plain grumpy and
uncooperative and refuse to activate the equivalent service on Vodafone.

The question is this: is it possible to manually activate it yourself by,
for instance, simply entering a certain key combination on the phone?

No. HSCSD (High Speed Circuit Switched Data) requires network support. and
guess what? Orange is the only UK supplier. the 3rd party provider are just
being unreasonable on general principles, but even if they wanted to, they
couldn't activate the service - the Vodafone network simply doesn't support
it. The 'activation' is them enabling it on your account, rather than
switching something on on your handset.

Fastest connection on Voda is GPRS, but can get expensive if you do a lot of
high volume downloads, although it is a lot faster (43.2ish max.)
