V551 battery not lasting, charging an issue

Posted: 03-02-2006, 01:50 AM
My V551 is about four months old now and I'm having some problems with the
battery and charging system. The battery has now been through many charging
cycles, including allowing it to fully discharge, and it is now lasting only
three days on a full charge. I've kept track of my uptime the last three
charging cycles and the battery is only making it about 80 hours.

The phone is constantly on, I never turn it off with very few exceptions. I
make and receive about 5 or 6 calls of short to medium length, none over 10
minutes, in this period of time.

In addition, my chargers (I have two of the model PSM5037B, 375 mA travel
chargers) are giving me some hassle as well. My phone reports that it is
"Unable To Charge" on one of the units and takes more than 4 hours on the
other to reach a full charge. I can charge my Bluetooth headset on either
of the chargers with no apparent problem, so I'm thinking I may have an
issue with my phone or the battery in it, or both.

Has anyone else had similar problems? I'm checking out the Motorola website
this evening for information and I'll be taking both chargers and my phone
to my dealer for additional scrutiny and possible warranty service this
week. Thanks for any input.

Your chargers are very wimpy, and will take far longer than 4 hours to a full
charge. Consider getting a fast 1500 mA charger.

Your battery will run down much faster when you are in weak signal areas.

The phone was up to a full charge in less than 3 hours until just recently,
using either charger. I live in a signal-rich environment. I always have a
full, 100% signal on my phone while I'm at home.

If you are using Bluetooth, I think 3 days is very good. I get 3 to 5
days without Bluetooth. I also use the better charger. Travel
chargers are a pain because of the time required to charge. Don't
forget that, when the charge bars are full, the battery still isn't
fully charged. I often leave mine overnight even with the 1,500 mA
charger just to make sure.

Then your batteries were never even close to flat, since 375 mA isn't enough
to charge anywhere near that fast from flat, particularly if the phone is on.

Correct. Only when the phone says "charge complete" are you close to full
charge, and trickle charging continues after that. Of course "charge
complete" doesn't necessarily mean that the battery is at full rated capacity,
only that it won't accept more charging.

My battery was lasting as long as a week. It is rated as having 225 hours
of standby life. That's about 9 days. Talk life is rated at 3.75 hours or
225 minutes.

I understand the routine for charging and I usually charge the phone in the
evening and then through the night. I don't charge the phone until I start
to get the "Low Battery" warnings.

That's unusual. 2-3 days is about what you should expect in typical
conditions, particularly if you've enabled features that consume power (e.g.,
Bluetooth).

Ratings only apply to ideal (laboratory, strong signal, new battery)
conditions -- real world performance will be significantly less, often much
less -- so you really can't rely on them.

I normally throw my phone on the charger each night. That way I'm prepared
for times when it's inconvenient to charge (e.g., on a long sailing passage).

Some possible causes of reduced battery life:
1. Aging of the battery.
2. Poorer signal (which causes the phone to boost transmit power).
3. No signal areas (which cause the phone to hunt for signal).
4. Power consuming features (e.g., Bluetooth).

That's UP TO 225 hours.

Typical V551 on Cingular, 2-3 days standby if no calls are made. If calls
are made, 1-2 days.

Cingular uses a receiver duty cycle of DRX5 and AT&T used a DRX2 standard in
some areas. So not known what DRX cycle your phone is on.

With DRX9, you might get 225 hours with a new battery in a high signal area.
With DRX2, you might get 48 hours with a new battery in a low signal area.

Thats why the manufacturers spec is "up to". Cingular and others just copy
them with no regard for the real world nor their system settings.

If you get 2-3days, thats normal on Cingular.
