Phil, Aaron properly clarified my intent. Motorola is not a carrier;
it's Cingular, TMo, etc. that order the phones bundled or, more
accurately, UNbundled to keep costs low. Most people probably never miss
MPT. I respect you for not wanting to pirate it but you don't need to
spend the $50 retail price to get a legit copy. There are lots of ebay
sellers selling MPT for as little as $14 delivered including the cable.
As long as you get a version that's 2.11 or higher it will update itself
to version 4.04 (or whatever is newest) as you do the installation.

Thanks for the info. I would pay $5 to download from a known legit site.
I might pay $10 for a CD. If that's not enough for the author, I will do
without until owning it is obviously necessary or I have disposable
income.

You can purchase legal older versions of MPT, usually new old stock
from Ebay. From this you can upgrade for free to the latest version
of MPT thought you would have to do it via update after update via
LiveUpdate. I purchased my boxed copy of MPT at Office Depot in the
blowout section of our local store for $1.88 since it was missing the
cable, which I had already from Ebay for cheap. It was version 2.x
and after updating regularly I have the latest 4.0
