v551 sound problem

Posted: 02-06-2006, 12:59 AM
My daughter has experienced a problem with her speaker lately where the
sound seems to be very faint and then return to normal even though I can
hear her just fine. This is in an area where she is receiving 4 bars of
signal. Turning the phone on and off has not done anything. The phone
is out of warranty.

Does anyone have any suggestions? Any recommendations of a reputable
company that could repair the problem?

Thanks
Ken K

I've experienced the same problem with my 551 earpiece speaker on a
couple of occasions. I seem to remember one of those times selecting the
speakerphone option "on", and then "off" which seemed to correct the volume
problem in the earpiece.

I just read another post on this board
(http://groups.google.com/group/alt.c...95ad3478 74cf)
that was dead on. I've had the same problem (decreased to no volume)
intermittently and sure enough, if I press on the little "M" in the
center of the earpiece, everything comes in loud and clear. I've
popped off the four little covers and saw the torx screws, but I don't
have a torx driver the right size to unscrew them. Putting in some
kind of spacer (the person who posted above used weatherstrip... ?)
seems like it would work. Anyway, it's easy enough to test -- when the
phone gets quiet, push on the earpiece.
