what is the point of unlocking a cell phone

It allows you to use it with another carrier. For example, when only
Cingular had the Razr unlocking it let you use it with TMobile. Also, if
you travel outside the country you can use local prepaid SIMs instead of
paying outrageouslyhigh international roaming rates.
