considering the v3 razr

Posted: 10-31-2005, 03:53 AM
Hello,

I'm thinking of switching carriers(and phone) and where I am live I
don't have too many choices (TMobile and Cingular do not service my
area). CellularOne does service my area and they have the razr v3
available. The bad thing is that it has a camera in it and my job
forbids any type of camera in the building. So based on that I have a
question:

I've read that the bluetooth in the phone can reach up to 100 meters and
I was wondering if anyone knows about about bluetooth and the v3 to know
whether it would be possible for me to leave my phone in the car and
just take in a wireless bluetooth headset into my workplace and be able
to dial out/receive calls while the phone is still in the car? If it is
possible what component of that would make it possible (just for my own
curiousity) and does it matter what headset I would purchase to make the
idea work? I've read that the motorola software allows you to dial with
the phone; would I have to install that on my PC at work for my idea to
work?

Some other questions:
The price of the phone is still kind of high and I've looked online and
to get the phone for anything below about 270 I'd have to signup for the
services that aren't even in my area. Since I can't do that does anyone
know where I could buy the phone other than for the price of 270 that
I've seen so far (newegg)?

How do carriers work with you if you don't buy a phone from them? Would
it benefit me any to get an unlocked phone? If I get the phone from
CellularOne and sign up with a 2 yr agreement I still have to pay $225
for it and $300 with a 1 year contract so if possible I'd prefer to get
it somewhere else (their website says the retail is $314).

thanks for any info.
Brandon

I think you'd find your idea to be quite impractical. If you're not
allowed to have a phone with a camera then just get one without or get
both and swap the SIM when you're not at work. For best prices try
independent local (non-carrier owned) cell shops. Here in Hawaii TMo
still wants $239 while TCA Wirless, an authorized TMo agent, sells them
for $79.

It might be impractical but it was just an idea. I was thinking of getting
one without a camera and was looking at either the LG 4015 or the Motorola
V180, the only 2 I liked that didn't have a camera in them. Something last
night made me start looking at the razr despite having already looked at it
and knowing it had a cam. I figured it wouldn't hurt me too much by being
at my workplace and not able to make personal calls on my cell. I can
always take a break and make a call outside if I need to make one or call
out on the company phone and then have someone call me back on it. I
briefly thought about 2 phones but don't want to deal with 2 of them, nor do
I actually need 2. I don't need one for work and the one I use now at work
is my personal one so dealing with 2 of them means I have 2 for the same
purpose which would be impractical althought that would be lessened somewhat
by swapping SIM cards. I didn't know there were independent cell shops but
never really thought about it either. I'll look around though.

Thanks for the info.

Another thought, you might be able to physically disable the camera, or
replace the outer lenses cover with something which isn't transparent.

No. Bluetooth has different range classes, and the range class in the phone
and handset (Class 2) is limited to about 10 meters.

Everything I've read says it's a Class 1(100m) in the phone; I haven't looked at
headsets though but I would think Class 1 headsets are available if phones
supporting the class are available but maybe that is wishful thinking..
http://www.motorola.com/motoinfo/pro.../0,,69,00.html in the bulleted
list it mentions Class 1

Thanks for the correction. However, I've only seen that on the V3 and V710.
Others, including headsets, are Class 2.

So is this a case of chicken and egg and now that the phone supports Class 1 I'll
have to wait for headsets to become available to work with the phone to its maximum
ability? Barring that, is my idea technically feasible or are there other obstacles
that could or could not be overcome?
