Can't edit ringtone

deleted one it liked because, after I did this, I couldn't edit any
ringtones (phonebook or group or anything). I could play the tunes
but, as soon as the phone started making a list, it dropped back to
the main screen.
I deleted my entire address book and reinstalled it. No difference. I
reflashed the thing per XLR8's instructions (scary) and still,
although I lost everything I did, I can't edit anything
Any ideas?
