I found a SIM! What does it do?

Posted: 09-06-2005, 03:22 PM
I'm walking along and see something interesting on the ground. I pick
it up and it is a Cingular 64k SmartChip in what appears to be good
condition. It looks just like the one that is in my v551. I'm curious
to plug it in and see what happens, but I really like my phone and
don't want to damage it or lose all the phone settings. Most of my
entries are in the phone memory and not the SIM because I like all the
extra features.

Anyway, what would happen if I plugged it in? My phone is not unlocked
as far as I know, but it is Cingular.

If it is not physically damaged, it should not damage your phone to plug it
in a switch it on. That's what I would do.

If it is a prepaid SIM with some credit left on it, you could get some free
calls. Or, you could be a Good Samaritan, read out the mobile phone number
from the card, and call Cingular to see if they can get it back to the
rightful owner.

I plugged it in. Works fine, added a bunch of entries to my address
book. One was for HELL. I didn't call it. I'd hate for that to go
through.

It comes up as Unregistered rather than Cingular. I got it's number
and called it. Fast busy signal - bad sign. I called Cingular, they
said to throw it away. Sounds like good advice.

Some phones will wipe the recent calls list when you plug-in a new SIM,
although I'm not sure of any modern GSM phones that do. I know that
most/all iDEN phones do, as did the first GSM phone my dad had (although
I don't even recall the make/model -- I just recall he swapped phones
with my mom to see if my mom wanted to upgrade her phone, and later that
day he was trying to find the number of somebody that called him earlier
and the list was gone)

iDEN phones do it as a security measure, the idea being that phones may
be swapped among different users on a frequent basis, but each user will
use their own SIM, so this way it removes the last user's personal
details.

I just don't understand what they mean in that particular order.
