On my V188 I have Network bands 850/1900 900/1800 and automatic. Mine
is setup for automatic. By changing this what does it do, and should I
change it? Does this help with reception?

Automatic will guarantee you have coverage in the Americas (850/1900) or
elsewhere (900/1800) without user intervention.
Choosing 850/1900 or 900/1800 (depending on which is appropriate for your
locale) may let the phone ready to make a call a few seconds sooner after
power-up, since it is not searching frequencies where there are no towers.

My phone (a v3) was set to automatic but when I went to Europe a few
weeks ago I had to change it to 900/1800 to find a network. I then
changed it back to Automatic and it still found the networks. When I'm
in the US, which is 99.9% of the time, I just leave it on 850/1900 since
those are the only US frequencies.
