Advice on add-on antenna please?

I get one/two bars of signal (Verizon) at my house, but its not enoug
to make a call or get messages. The nearest workable signal is nearly
mile away (very hilly area, I live in the valley of course). I have
friend who gets no signal at her house but uses an antenna extensio
and can make calls....
Anyone have any experience with equipment that works? (Links ar
appreciated) We're using Motorola phones (v710 and e815
