Is it possible to change the tone sounded on a V3 when a text message
arrives ? The manual is not clear on this.

You certainly can.
Go to Settings | Ring Styles | Choose which one you want to change, i.e.
Loud / Soft and then select the Detail option (one below).
There you can change all the tones for text msgs, voicemail, call etc.

One thing to watch; if you have a custom ringtone defined for someone in
your phonebook, the phone will override both the voice AND text tones
for that person. So if you have a long custom ringtone defined and the
person sends you an SMS, the phone will play the whole ringtone until it
reaches the end or is interrupted.
This might be standard behaviour for Motorola phones but it caught me
out.

I'm guessing as an unofficial mod, yes? I'm really impressed with all
the stuff going on at motomodders and other communities, but I'm in two
minds about the whole modding scene as a solution to Motorola's
oversights.
The still-youthful, hacker mentality part of me is screaming, "Yes, this
is so cool! You can hack this phone to bits!" while the boring,
rapidly-approaching-middle-age fart part of me is saying, "No. I paid
good money for this bloody V3 and I want it to work the way I want RIGHT
NOW!"
I suspect it's all going to be down to whatever becomes available first,
a set of V3 modifications that meet my exacting requirements, or the SE
Z520i which, silly looped antenna aside, looks to be very nearly my
ideal phone.
