modem

hi all,
my problem is when i install my software, the read me says after insulation,
it will tell me to restart, thats my first problem, it doesn't tell me to
restart, this leads to "error / telephone interface cannot successfully
start"
im running xp pro, when i plug the usb cable in i can hear the computer make
its noise that it found it, then i can see it in the device manager, all
looks good there, you know, you can only have 2 com port options, 1 or 2,
ive tried both, making sure the software and the modem in the device manager
are synced.
any ideas ?
