Turn on/off V171 silently.

Despite my best efforts, I cannot find any way to configure my new V171
mobile phone so that I can turn it on and off with out it playing a tune
to tell me, and everyone withing earshot, that I've done it.

Is it possible to disable this irritating 'feature' other than by means
of a large brick?
