phone tools set up

Posted: 01-05-2005, 05:46 PM
I have just bought a copy of phone tools and a data cable but am having
trouble getting the phone to connect with my PC. I have installed the only
driver I can find which has added a motorola modem to my devices. the set up
program seem s to recognise my phone and puts me on the little mobile phone
on the desktop - the problem is that all it does then is say it is
initilizing and says there is no phone image avalable. Please help

Make sure you have done an update to your original program. Although it
should have done an autoupdate, the first time I installed my (purchased)
copy, I had to do it manually. Any version of 2.** most likely won't see
your newer phone

My phone and mPT did the "modem only" bit when I tried to use the drivers automatically
installed for BT dongle management by XP SP2. I think they are not great with file
transfer and conflict with the Widdcom manufactured software which nearly all dongle
makers/3rd party software supply.
After 10 hours I discovered Microsoft article 883258 "What can I do if some of the
Bluetooth device features no longer function?" which explains how to force XP SP2 to use
the the dongle makers drivers (on Belkin CD in my case) instead of its own .
Hint:
- Uninstall software
- restart without dongle
- open Device Manager on the desktop (ready for later use - necessary in my case)
- install software, plugging in dongle when asked BUT DON'T HIT OK/DON'T CONTINUE
- wait a minute after you plug in the dongle (purposely lets XP install "bad" drivers)
- still DON'T HIT OK but go to Device Manager and update drivers in the bluetooth radio
entry which is NOT the "enumerator" one, choosing to install from disk and pointing at the
correct .inf file in the 3rd party software. That replaces those "bad drivers")
- NOW hit OK, finish and restart (using 3-fingered salute and Task Manager in my case!)

Make appropriate selections for BT services, making your computer visible, bonding/paring
with your handset (turn on BT!) then setup mPT probably from the menu item on the desktop
virtual handset "New Phone" and it should eventually scan and recognise your phone.(I am
not sure of the order for those events! Note that for bonding you only get (less than?) 60
secs to enter the PIN number on your phone so don't use a long one!)

Now works fine for me and the tools seem pretty good (2 days, only used MM suite so far!)

There may be dongle drivers on the mPT CD - on my Belkin CD the one to point to (update
from disk) was called BTWUSB.INF (reads "WIDCOMM Bluetooth USB Device Installation Script"
when opened in notepad) in the BIN folder. Note that unplugging the dongle is said to take
you back to square one! (XP SP "bad drivers) Hint: If you can't see lots of "virtual" com
ports in Device Manager something has probably gone wrong... (I did disable Serial Port in
CMOS BIOS but probably not needed)

Of course, the dongle and your phone may just be separated by a lot of metal.....

Have fun and don't curse me! (... much)

OK , I did not read the post properly (Cable not dongle!)
Hope some may be relevant.
Maybe you bought a dongle while you were waiting...

This may explain some of the great difficulty I had getting Mobile
Phonetools installed today on my computers with my Belkin USB BT dongle.

Installs/deinstalls, the complaint about my Belkin drivers that I don't
have a licensed device. Finally, I got it installed so the tools will
work (i.e. Sent a couple MP3s to the device, updated the phonebook,
copied a couple pictures off my V551). I'll wait until March to try the
data on the phone, since I can't drop my Sprint plan until March, and I
have it better there right now with my Treo600 and data plan.

Re:Microsoft 883258 and not using XP SP2 drivers
Replying to my own post:
There seems to be a snag! The setup survives a restart but not a turn off. After a turnoff
the tray BT icon is usually red and the dongle disabled. A restart cures it but means when
you start from cold you must do a restart (effectivly starting twice!) each time . Not
very convenient.

I uninstalled the Belkin software. Unplugged the dongle. Restarted and plugged in the
dongle again. XP installed its drivers. I paired./bonded my phone using the tray icon and
then I just installed my other third party software and did not use the Belkin CD at all.
Seems OK ... so far!

Sorry if I wasted (... more) of anyone's time.

(In configuring my 3rd party software (mPT), when asked, I selected the standard modem
that XP had installed and let it do its own search for drivers - ignoring the "Other
Device" that was offered.)

Pat.
