a1000 modem

I have a new a1000, great phone but can't get USB modem working from my
laptop. Seems to communicate with the modem, but when I dial, I get
error678, the remote computer did not respond. In the log, it looks like
there is a "no carrier" response from the modem. It all works fine with my
old Nokia 6310i.

Any ideas?
