v500 voicemail number

hi, I've got an unlocked v500, with the orange software on it.
when I press and hold the 1 key it says "no answerphone number stored"

I thought it was then supposed to ask you if you'd like to set one, but it
doesn't.

Any ideas? I cannot find an option for this anywhere.
