Serial port programming on Vxxx

Hello,
I need a help with making a direct serial connection to the external device
(gps receiver) from motorola V500.
I have 2 questions:
1. Are there any working examples of serial communication for Vxxx?
2. What kind of cable do I need - for Vxxx standard cable is for USB, so I
think, COM cable will be more complex - any examples of available cables or
maybe schemas?
