I'm on my 2nd v-300 here, and I've noticed something about both of
them. If I set the phone to vibrate while I'm out and about, the next
morning, it's invariably set to "loud", and scares me half to death
when it rings.
Is that normal?

LOL!! Are you sure you aren't hitting the side buttons by accident, they
change the style settings
