Non Motorola Battery

I have a non Motorola battery for my V600, as a spare for the one which came
with the phone.
I assume it is not a genuine motorola battery as it does not say motorola on
it.
I think I read somewhere that using non Motorola batteries can cause damage
to the battery or phone (or both).
Is this correct, or is it a ploy to make people buy only the genuine
batteries ?
Is it OK to use this battery ?
