Not the same thing.... T-Mobile needs two bars of signal to be useful.
One sometimes works, but you get call failed or equivelent message from
your display more often then not when making (or trying to make) calls
with one bar. Verizon CDMA used to work for me with no bars, just as
long as I had a signal I could usually make calls. First it was all
inclusive rates for camera phone usage that sent me away from verizon,
then no bluetooth and no decent rate for allowable laptop data that sent
me away from Sprint, and now it's the all-mighty most impoortant signal
that will send me away from T-Mobile. Their rates rock. But my house
isn't well served. Pity as everywhere else I go is.

It is also common under one bar to not receive sms alerts. How many
bars do you have on that v66? A v66 worked best on T-Mobile for
me...But no bluetooth on him.

You are making a major mistake in your thinking.
All signal meters are not calibrated to the same value (Bars/db)

A CDMA phone with two bars is not receiving the same signal as a GSM
phone that shows two bars.

One GSM phone with two bars is not receiving the same signal as another
GSM phone with two bars.

The threshold in db that a GSM phone will probably be the same
for many different phones, but the different phones may show a
wide range of signal levels (bars) for that minimum signal.

On the phone you have, the minimum signal that the phone will work
is equal to two bars on it's meter.
Other GSM phones may only show one bar, or possibly no bars if
it is calibrated to show no bars with the minimum useable signal.

I have one TDMA phone that will no longer work when the last
bar goes out on the signal meter,
and I have another one that will work at signal levels way below
the point that the last bar disappears.
But both phone will work (and/or) not work in the same locations.
Both phones have close to the same minimum signal capability.

And there is one phone I have around hear that wont read
under two bars even with the antenna disconnected.
And it won't work with less than 3 bars.

Well, I will have to find out if I can get to a service menu in my
particular phone.. You do seem right though. My Nokia is different
then my M0torola v66 I took back was...The Nokia needs 1 bar to think
about making a call, two to suceed.... The Nokia commonly reports no
service in one bar areas..

I think we are getting confused on this issue a bit.
My other reply was not in the correct context.

That was the context I intended my response for.
That is the point that the phone can no longer get a reliable
copy of the control signal. ("No service" message)
Some will lose track of it at one or two bars, while others
can monitor it at less than one bar of signal strength.
Not because one can hear it better than the other,
but because they show a different signal strength in bars
at the same db levels.

That is a completely different context that I failed to address.
A phone may be able to keep track of the control signal
but when the phone tries to make contact with the tower,
the tower can't hear the phone.
That can result from inadequate transmit power,
bad antenna pattern (gain), compromised or bad receiving antenna,
ambient noise, and other acts of god.

The phone can hear the tower, but can't talk to it.

If someone calls you, then the phone knows
that someone is calling, but it can't complete the call,
because it can't make contact with the tower,
(the tower can't hear the phone)
so the phone records it as a failed call, even
though it can hear the tower and knows who is calling.

i also have a problem with lots of missed calls not showing up unti
later, and i get extremely poor service anywhere except for way out i
the \"country\" and my text messages can take hours or days to arrive
do you think t-mobile would send me a new phone if i told them abou
this? i have a v66 as well.
