Save Firmware through PST?

I'd like to know if this is a valid way of saving one's firmware:

Through PST, create a new Field Update File
Check the boxes next to Software and Flex
Click on the Field Update Data from Phone icon on the toolbar
Wait until download is done, save *.idp file

Does this correctly back up the original phone software before, for example,
applying a firmware upgrade?
