can't dial even from hyperterm with v60i TDMA AT&T Wireless phone as modem

I couldn't get my V60i TDMA AT&T Wireless phone to dial out as a modem.
I even brought up Hyperterm on my Windows XP PC and I am able to enter AT
commands.
When I enter only "AT" I get the OK response, but when I enter ATDT5551234
(or any number),
I get "NO CARRIER" as the response. Will the V60i TDMA phone work as a plain
old modem
at 9600 baud? I know it is a slow speed, but I just want it as an emergency
backup. It works fine
sychronizing using TrueSyncPlus, so I don't think the problem is in the
connection from the PC
to the phone.

Is there a special init string that I need to use to set up the phone to
dial on AT&T's TDMA digital network,
or do I need to force it to analog mode?

If it needs to be in analog mode, I can't find the way to force it.

AT&T does not support this function, they used to with a special 3com modem
and cable on certain phones long time ago but it is no longer available.

No you can't.

No digital phone has a real "modem" in it- just a way totransfer data
to/from a cell carrier. The carrier then uses a "real" modem at their
HQ for you, to connect you to the outside world.

Unfortunately, AT&T doesn't have a bank of modems at HQ for this
purpose, so they don't support data transfer over TDMA. Cingular
does, so your phone's "modem" would work if you were a Cingular TDMA
customer.

It's not a connection problem, just a carrier who doesn't support TDMA
CSD (Circuit Switch Data) calls.

Analog mode would be useless- the "modem" in your phone only works in
digital mode, with a compatible carrier. In analog mode you'd need a
special interface cable to connect the phone to a real analog modem,
which were available a few years ago for a few popular phones (Nokia
5160, for example) for big bucks.

The special interface cables generally forced the phones into analog
mode.
