CAN I ACTIVATE THIS PHONE

Posted: 11-15-2003, 02:03 AM
Hi All,

I just bought 2 brand new V120E's on Ebay to replace 2 V120C's. The
blue illumination and the lighter color screen background make it much easier
for my wife's and my old tired eyes to see the black writing.

One phone was totally unused & unassembled--when I power it up, the
screen says "needs activation", and that one has 1 minute & 29 seconds on the
lifetime timer. The other one had the battery and battery door already
assembled, and had a phone number already programmed in. I called it and it
rings, so it evidently is still active. However it only has 54 seconds on the
lifetime timer. Evidently someone activated it to test it, and never used it.
You can also see that it is brand new. The serial number and the ESN are very
close to the other one.

Using the VZW website, I know that I will have no problems assigning the
unused one's ESN to one of my phone numbers, (I have already done that before),
but what will happen when I try to assign the already assigned ESN to my other
phone number ??? Will the VZW system reject it being that is already assigned,
or will it change assignments with no problem. I don't want or need any
surprises !!!

Thanks,

RON

A new ESN/phone number paring will supercede the old one.
The old phone number is immediately de-activated.

This type of thing is done all the time. No worries.

Go ahead and try it. there shouldnt be any problems in activating the
already activated phone. If there are then verizon will take care of it.

Let us analyze this "No Problem" scenario. Let us say that you found the box
that my currently activated phone came in. And you go home and take the ESN
from the side of my discarded box and plug it into the VERIZON Wireless
"Activate Phone" section of the WEBSITE, (just for the hell of it). You feel
that the system will just grab the ESN from my current and active account
and just assign it to to your mobile number thus rendering my phone useless?
End of story? I Don't Think So. In the least, the phone will be activated
with both numbers. In the past, you were able to have 2 mobile numbers
activated in the same phone/ESN. I did it all the time when In the old days
because I had a 200 min off peak plan I used on weekends and another plan I
used for PEAK (B4 the incredible plans available now, unthought of 10 years
ago ) Recently, they (VERIZON) say it can no longer be done. While the
story is different, the exact details and scenario are identical. You will
require VERIZONs input to deal with this matter. In fact, it is interesting
why you were sent an activated phone.Sounds like these were dealer phones of
some sort, but even so, getting sent an activated phone raises a degree of
concern, if not a FLAG, with me.
In closing, nothing will explode by attempting this, except possibly
freaking out the switch and causing you a hassle. When dealing with
technology in todays world nothing ever surprises me and I also have learned
to never say never. But I doubt this "let 'er rip" outlook towards this
situation will be the end result. Keep us posted, interesting case.

YES!! - no worries

You can have 2 phone numbers assigned to 1 ESN. For whatever reason.
(Different plans, a business and a personal line, different areas, whatever...)
This is done all the time. Been there, done that - I have done it for years.

You CANNOT have 2 ESNs assigned to 1 number, repeat - CANNOT!!

So, using your below 'example', IF (and I mean if) someone were to somehow
successfully do an ESN change (your ESN to their number), YES your number
would be immediately deactivated and the new number activated.
This is how it's ALWAYS worked.

Key here is because it is a DIFFERENT ESN. Get it??

But, if I am not mistaken, there is verification done, preventing the 'hijacking' of
an ESN to prevent fraud.

However the system issues caused by the same ESN being used with 2
different numbers is going to totally mess with the over the air
programming, and the phone will not be able to be programmed in that manner,
either the initial programming or the PRL updates. Don't know who the
phones were purchased from, but that person needs to be contacted to have
that ESN removed from the mobile number to which it is current assigned so
that you won't have problems with the programming and activation. Just a
word of advice from a 4 year veteran of Customer Service, who has seen this
situation more than once.
